Governance and Compliance
The structured retirement of an AI system or model, including stopping use, removing access, archiving documentation, addressing data, notifying stakeholders, and managing residual risk. Decommissioning is often poorly governed and can leave orphaned models, data, integrations, and dependencies that create future security, privacy, or compliance issues.
The IBM Watson for Oncology product was decommissioned by Memorial Sloan Kettering and others by 2018 after performance shortfalls.
McDonald's IBM AI drive-through ordering pilot was decommissioned in June 2024 after viral order errors and pilot performance issues.
NEDA's Tessa chatbot, replacing a human helpline, was decommissioned in May 2023 within days of giving harmful weight loss advice.
