Anthropic released MCP in November 2024; within 6 months, 1,000+ community MCP servers were published - including servers for GitHub, Slack, PostgreSQL, Filesystem, and Puppeteer browser control.

Cursor AI adopted MCP to let developers connect their coding agent to private codebases, Jira boards, and internal docs - reducing context-switching by providing the agent direct tool access.

Block (formerly Square) built MCP servers for their internal developer platforms, enabling Claude-powered coding agents to query internal APIs, check deployment status, and create tickets without custom integration code.
