Governance and Compliance
The expectation that organizations can explain, justify, monitor, and correct the behavior of automated or AI-assisted systems. It requires governance evidence, not just technical explanations. Auditors should be able to trace who approved the use case, what risks were identified, what controls were selected, what testing was performed, and how performance is monitored after release.
The Algorithmic Accountability Act of 2022, reintroduced in the US Congress by Senator Wyden, proposed mandatory impact assessments for automated decision systems.
Canada's Directive on Automated Decision-Making requires federal departments to publish Algorithmic Impact Assessments before deployment, with results available on the Open Government Portal.
New York City Local Law 144 requires annual independent bias audits of automated employment decision tools, with audit summaries published on employer websites.
