Governance and Compliance
The European Commission function supporting implementation and enforcement of EU AI Act rules, especially for general-purpose AI models and coordination across the AI governance ecosystem. Organizations tracking EU obligations should monitor AI Office guidance, codes of practice, templates, and enforcement signals as part of regulatory change management.
The European AI Office was established within DG CONNECT and became operational in February 2024, led by Lucilla Sioli.
The AI Office facilitated the GPAI Code of Practice published in July 2025 covering Transparency, Copyright, and Safety and Security chapters.
Under EU AI Act Articles 88 and 89, the AI Office has authority to investigate GPAI providers and request information on systemic risk models.
