Governance and Compliance
A maintained register of AI systems, models, tools, and AI-enabled business processes in use or under development. It is the practical starting point for scoping risk assessments, ownership, compliance obligations, and monitoring. A useful inventory includes system purpose, owner, vendor, data categories, model type, risk tier, regulatory exposure, integration points, monitoring status, and review dates.
US Executive Order 14110 (October 2023) required federal agencies to publish annual AI Use Case Inventories, with agencies like HHS, DHS, and DoD publishing their inventories on ai.gov.
New York City Local Law 144 (2023) required automated employment decision tools to be inventoried and bias-audited annually, with results posted publicly.
Credo AI, IBM watsonx.governance, and ServiceNow AI Governance are commercial platforms commonly used by enterprises to maintain centralized AI inventories with risk tiering metadata.
